Creating an eBook might seem daunting at first. Not only do you need to write compelling content, but you also have to design and format it into a polished, professional document that attracts readers and encourages downloads.

To help you navigate this process, I've compiled some valuable insights from my own experiences and advice from industry experts.

Don't worry—it’s more manageable than it seems. I'll also introduce you to some practical tools and templates that can streamline the creation, publishing, and selling of your ebook.

What is an Ebook?

An eBook, or electronic book, is a digital version of a traditional printed book, intended to be read on devices such as computers, tablets, or smartphones. eBooks are powerful marketing tools, consisting of multiple digital “pages” that convey information to readers. They are often formatted as PDF files, making them easy to share.

Ebook Benefits

According to Statista, the global ebook market is expected to generate $14.61 billion in sales by 2024. Following this trend, the market is anticipated to grow at an annual rate of 1.62%, reaching an estimated $15.33 billion by 2027.

With these promising projections, now is an ideal time to explore how an ebook could benefit your business.

While there are various types of lead magnets, ebooks continue to stand out as a top choice. They offer readers:

  • Comprehensive digital content in a landscape often dominated by brief headlines and quick soundbites.
  • Visual data that enhances and supports the written material.
  • Instant access to the ebook’s content whenever they need it.

For your business, writing ebooks offers several key advantages. It can help you generate revenue, attract new customers, create buzz around your brand, and establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry.

But what if you already have a successful blog packed with long-form content? You might wonder whether creating an eBook is worth your effort. The answer is a resounding yes.

eBooks offer remarkable portability. They can be stored on multiple devices without taking up any physical space, making them incredibly convenient. If readers prefer a traditional format, they have the option to print the eBook. Otherwise, the digital format is environmentally friendly, reducing the need for paper.

eBooks are also highly accessible. They allow readers to adjust font sizes or use text-to-speech features, making the content more user-friendly for a diverse audience. Additionally, ebooks are easily searchable; if a reader is looking for specific information, they can find it with a quick search.

Given that lead generation is a primary goal in content marketing, ebooks have become a vital component of a successful inbound marketing strategy.

In this post, I'll guide you through the process of creating an eBook, sharing my experiences and tips. And don't worry if design isn't your strong suit—I’ve got solutions for that as well.

1. Samples of eBook Title Ideas to Spark Your Creativity

If you're looking for inspiration, here are some ebook title ideas to help get your creative juices flowing:

  • X Best Practices for [Insert Industry/Topic]
  • An Introduction to [Insert Industry/Topic]
  • X Common Questions About [Insert Industry/Topic] Answered
  • X [Insert Industry/Topic] Statistics for Better Decision-Making

Note: Replace “X” with the appropriate number. You can also use this free Blog Topic Generator tool to come up with more ideas. Often, blog topics are comprehensive enough to expand into longer-form ebook content.

Pro Tip: From my personal experience, I’ve found that instead of taking a broad approach, it's more effective to dive deep into the specific needs of a targeted audience. Understanding their motivations, preferences, and challenges allows you to create content that truly resonates.

Remember, your ebook can’t cater to everyone. Trying to address the pain points of a wide audience in a single book is often impractical.

For this blog post, I’ll be using the PowerPoint version of template two. As we progress through each section, I'll show you a side-by-side comparison of the original template slide and how I customized it.

Conduct Thorough Research

Even if you’re already well-versed in your topic, it’s essential to dive deeper to understand exactly what your audience is eager to learn and how you can make your ebook stand out in a crowded market.

When I’m conducting research for an ebook, here’s my approach:

  • Review existing content: Start by exploring current publications on your topic. Identify gaps in knowledge and areas that haven’t been fully explored. Addressing these unanswered questions will make your ebook more valuable and comprehensive.
  • Perform keyword research: Use keyword research to discover relevant terms and phrases related to your topic. This will help you uncover trends and better reach your target audience who are searching for information on your subject.
  • Gather original data: To set your ebook apart, collect original insights and data. If possible, conduct interviews with industry experts or send out surveys to your audience to gather unique statistics. This positions you as an authority and adds credibility to your content.

After gathering all your research, ensure that the information is accurate and up-to-date. Keep your findings well-organized so you can easily reference them during the writing process.

Pro Tip: Review your blog posts related to the topic. This can provide valuable insights into the questions your audience is asking, helping you confirm if you’re on the right track. If your research uncovers a different focus, consider adjusting your ebook’s direction or finding a way to incorporate those new insights.

Outline Each Chapter of Your Ebook

Your ebook’s introduction should set the tone, capturing the reader's interest and outlining what they’ll gain from reading.

Ask yourself: What will your ebook cover? How will it benefit the reader? For tips on crafting an engaging introduction, check out this post.

While some may say that an ebook is simply a collection of blog posts strung together, I believe that each chapter should indeed standalone like a blog post, yet they must also seamlessly flow from one to the next.

The best way to structure your ebook is by treating it as a comprehensive crash course on your chosen topic. For instance, in creating an ebook, I know I need to cover the following:

  • How to write effective copy
  • How to design an ebook
  • How to optimize ebooks for lead generation and promotion

Although my example includes only a few chapters, remember that your ebook doesn’t have to be lengthy.

A Golden Rule for Ebook Length

Write only as much as is necessary to effectively educate your audience on your topic. If your ebook needs just five pages, that’s perfectly fine! If it requires 30 pages, that’s great too. The key is to avoid unnecessary filler—focus on delivering valuable content.

Now, let’s move on to crafting the actual copy of your eBook.

creating an ebook table of contents from template

Pro Tip: Enhance Your Understanding by Walking in the Reader’s Shoes In my experience, putting myself in the reader’s place has been invaluable. By imagining the reader’s journey, you can better understand how to structure your content. Consider where you want your readers to engage deeply and where you want them to ultimately arrive.

Break Down Each Chapter as You Write

Now it’s time to start writing! Approach each chapter as you would a detailed blog post—by breaking it down into smaller sections or bullet points. This method allows you to communicate your points simply and clearly, without resorting to overly complex language. It’s the most effective way to ensure your readers grasp the new concepts you’re presenting.

Maintaining a consistent structure throughout each chapter is crucial. This not only helps you establish natural transitions between chapters but also ensures that your content flows smoothly from one section to the next. Merely stitching together blog posts can disrupt this flow, which can detract from the overall coherence of your ebook.

These principles apply to other areas of marketing as well, such as email campaigns, call-to-action creation, and landing page development. As Dr. Flint McGlaughlin of MECLABS often says, “Clarity trumps persuasion.”

Keep Your Ebook Engaging

Want to ensure your ebook remains captivating for readers? Here are some key strategies that I’ve found particularly effective:

  • Use Value-Driven Keywords in Your Title: Include powerful adjectives like “amazing,” “awesome,” or “ultimate” in your title to highlight the value of your offer.
  • Consistency is Key: Maintain a consistent format throughout your ebook. This helps create a mental model for your readers, enhancing their understanding of the material.
  • Leverage Formatting to Highlight Important Content: Use formatting elements like bulleted lists, bold text, italics, and font size variations to draw attention to crucial points. This not only makes your content more visually appealing but also emphasizes the specific ideas you want your readers to remember.

By following these tips, you’ll create an ebook that not only educates but also engages your audience, making their reading experience both enjoyable and insightful.

Pro Tip: Embrace the “Less is More” PhilosophyWhen you're deep into writing, it's easy to get carried away, but I’ve found that the principle “less is more” can be incredibly useful. Striking the right balance of content is key—you want to provide enough information to be valuable without overwhelming your readers. It’s a good idea to ask for feedback once you’ve finished to ensure your content is both engaging and easy to digest.

Design Your Ebook

You can Download this eBook templates from HubSpot and customize them to use they are available in both PowerPoint and InDesign formats. If you’re new to PowerPoint, you might find this beginner-friendly guide helpful.

In our template, there’s only one “chapter page” (slide three). To create additional chapter pages—or any other pages—simply right-click on the slide and select “Duplicate Slide.” This action will generate a copy of your slide, which you can then move to the appropriate spot in your ebook using the sidebar or Slide Sorter view in PowerPoint. Customize each duplicated slide to suit the content of your subsequent chapters.

Pro Tip: Establish and Follow Brand Guidelines

When designing your eBook, it’s wise to establish some brand guidelines and adhere to them. Consistency is key—over time, your target audience will begin to recognize your brand and understand what your business represents. This consistency not only reinforces your brand identity but also positions you as a professional in your industry.

Choose the Right Colors

While it would be convenient if the free eBook templates perfectly matched your brand colors, that’s rarely the case. This is where you can truly customize your eBook. Since eBooks provide more space for color than your logo or website, consider using secondary colors from your brand’s palette. This is an opportunity to let your brand’s color scheme shine.

For guidance on how to integrate your brand’s colors into PowerPoint, check out this blog post. It will walk you through the process of customizing the color scheme in the eBook templates to align with your brand.

Pro Tip: I've found that using color strategically can be highly effective. For instance, red can be used to draw attention to something important, while yellow can be used to highlight key points. Every color has a specific role in content design and can significantly impact how information is perceived.

Incorporate Visuals

Incorporating images and graphics into ebooks can be challenging, but when done correctly, they complement your writing beautifully. Whether you add visuals during the writing process or afterward, they should serve to underscore key points or simplify complex concepts in a visually appealing way. Remember, visuals shouldn’t just be decorative—they should enhance the reader’s understanding of the material.

Additionally, if your ebook is data-heavy, you might want to download this free data visualization ebook for tips on creating compelling charts and graphs. This resource will help you present your data in a way that is both informative and engaging.

creating an ebook and adding visual elements and images

Pro Tip: Transform Data and Quotes into Visual Content One of the most critical aspects to consider when crafting your eBook is identifying data, insights, or quotes that can be visually represented. Incorporating images or embedding links to videos can provide your readers with a more immersive experience. As you write, take note of places where visuals could enhance the content.

Emphasize Quotes and Statistics

To further enrich your ebook, consider highlighting key quotes or statistics within your design. Just ensure that the quotes or stats you choose genuinely contribute to the value of the content.

When incorporating these elements, maintain a consistent layout. If your text is indented by an inch on both the left and right sides, make sure that your visual elements are aligned within those same margins. This consistency creates a polished and cohesive look throughout your ebook

Pro Tip: Balancing Visuals with White Space. While I'm a big advocate for large graphics and standout quotes, it's equally important to appreciate the power of white space. It's great to fill your eBook with text, images, quotes, and stats, but maintaining a balance ensures your content is both engaging and easy to digest.

Strategically Place Calls to Action (CTAs) in Your Ebook

With your content now written and designed, the next step is to optimize it for lead generation, reconversion, and promotion.

Consider how you arrived here — perhaps you clicked on a call-to-action (CTA) in an email, on a social media post, or somewhere else. A CTA is a link or visual element that prompts the visitor to click and visit a landing page, encouraging further engagement with your brand.

Since your ebook readers have already shown interest by downloading your content, use CTAs within the ebook to re-engage them and guide them further down your marketing funnel.

For example, a CTA could direct readers to another offer, the registration page for your annual conference, or even a product page. Depending on the action you want readers to take, CTAs can be designed as an in-line rectangle or as a full-page teaser for the next offer (see examples below).

To hyperlink a CTA in your eBook, or any image or text, to your desired URL, simply go to Insert >> Hyperlink in PowerPoint.

creating an ebook and adding CTAs into the content

Note: There's a 49 customizable calls-to-action created in PowerPoint by the HubSpot team that you can download and incorporate into your ebooks. You can grab them here.

While the PowerPoint ebook templates don’t include a dedicated CTA slide, it’s still easy to create one. Simply duplicate the Header/Subheader slide and adjust the text or add images as needed. Alternatively, you can go to Insert >> New Slide and start fresh.

Pro Tip: From my experience, the best places to insert CTA links are between chapters or right at the end of each one, or just after the conclusion. However, ensure your CTAs are subtle and don't overwhelm the reader.

Convert Your Ebook to PDF

Once your ebook is complete — CTAs and all — it’s time to convert it to a file format that's easily transferable to your readers.

To convert your ebook to a PDF, go to File >> Save As in your ebook template. Then, under File Format, choose PDF and select a destination on your computer to save the new file.

Why not just attach the file as-is to a landing page? Word documents, PowerPoints, and similar formats are great for creating your ebook but not ideal for delivering it. These editable templates are prone to corruption, distortion, or even loss of content when transferred from your computer to someone else’s.

This is where PDFs come in handy. You've likely seen these files before. Short for Portable Document Format, a .PDF essentially locks your ebook in place, ensuring it displays correctly on any device.

Pro Tip: One significant advantage of using PDFs is that you can share them as links, making it easier to distribute your ebook. Plus, your readers have the option to view it without downloading if they prefer.

Create a Dedicated Landing Page for Your Ebook

Your ebook should be accessible via a landing page on your website.

A landing page is a specific web page that highlights your offer and includes a form where visitors can provide their contact information in exchange for the ebook. This is a key step in converting visitors into leads that your sales team can follow up with.

For example, you likely accessed this ebook template through a landing page.

Pro Tip: Don’t Overlook SEO for Your Landing Page. When setting up your landing page, remember to optimize it for SEO. This can significantly impact your conversion rates. Make sure to optimize meta tags and incorporate relevant keywords related to your eBooks.

Promote Your Ebook and Track Its Success

With your landing page ready, it's time to start promoting your ebook using the destination URL across your marketing channels.

In 2024, around 80% of writers reported that marketing is the toughest part of the ebook process. On average, authors are spending over thirty-one hours and $617 per month on marketing their ebooks.

Here are five effective ways to promote your ebook:

  1. Advertise on Your Website: Feature a call-to-action (CTA) or link to your ebook’s landing page on prominent areas of your site, such as your resources page or homepage.
  2. Leverage Your Blog: Share an excerpt from your ebook or write a blog post on a related topic. At the end of your blog post, include a CTA to encourage readers to download your ebook. (This blog post itself serves as a great example of promoting an offer through a blog post.)
  3. Email Marketing: Send targeted emails to contacts who have shown interest in your offers, letting them know about your ebook.
  4. Paid Advertising and Co-Marketing: Use paid ads and collaborate with partners to reach a broader audience and promote your ebook effectively.
  5. Social Media: Post about your ebook on your social media channels and include a link to your landing page. Boost social sharing by adding share buttons within your ebook, like those found at the bottom of this example.

After your ebook is live and promoted, use marketing analytics to gauge its success. Track metrics such as:

  • Landing Page Analytics: Monitor the number of downloads and conversions to leads.
  • Closed-Loop Analytics: Assess how many leads have progressed to opportunities and customers for your business.

how to make an ebook

After launching and promoting your ebook across various marketing channels, it's crucial to track its performance using marketing analytics.

For example, use landing page analytics to gain insights into how many people downloaded your ebook. Additionally, analyze how many of those downloaders converted into opportunities and customers for your business. This data will help you measure the success of your ebook and refine your future marketing strategies.

How to Publish an Ebook

Publishing an ebook involves several crucial steps to ensure it's formatted correctly, priced appropriately, and presented professionally. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you through the process:

1. Convert to eBook Format

Before uploading your ebook, ensure it's in the correct format. This guarantees compatibility with various devices and maintains the layout.

Common ebook formats include:

  • PDF: Best for computer reading, maintaining the layout.
  • EPUB: Adapts to different screen sizes, ideal for mobile devices and tablets.
  • MOBI: Used mainly for Kindle devices.
  • AZW: Specific to Kindle e-readers but also viewable on other devices via the Kindle app.
  • ODF: Mainly for OpenOffice.
  • IBA: For Apple iBooks Author, supports multimedia.

2. Choose a Publishing Platform

Select a platform based on factors such as reach, ease of use, royalty rates, and target audience preferences. Consider exploring regional or niche platforms if they better fit your ebook’s focus.

Popular platforms:

  • Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP): Offers global distribution and promotional tools.
  • Apple Books: Ideal for Apple devices.
  • Barnes & Noble Press: For Nook devices and the Barnes & Noble website.
  • Kobo Writing Life: Provides global reach and control over pricing.
  • Draft2Digital: Simplifies distribution across multiple retailers.

3. Create an Account and Upload Your eBook

After setting up your account on the chosen platform:

  1. Upload Your Files: Follow the platform’s instructions to upload your ebook file and cover design. Ensure they meet the required formatting and size specifications.
  2. Fill Out Book Details: Enter essential information such as the title, author name, description, and categories. This metadata helps readers discover and understand your ebook.

4. Set Pricing and Royalties

Determine Pricing: Establish a price that balances competitiveness and revenue generation.

Set Royalty Rates: Understand the royalty structure of your chosen platform—this is the percentage of the sale price you earn per ebook. Different platforms have varying rates and terms.

Consider Free Distribution: Offering your ebook for free can increase exposure and attract a larger readership. It’s an effective way to build your email list and generate leads, even if it doesn’t provide immediate revenue.

5. Preview and Publish

Preview Your eBook: Ensure that it looks correct and is free of errors or formatting issues.

Publish: Once you’re satisfied with the preview, click the publish button to make your ebook available for purchase.

Note: The exact steps may vary depending on the platform you choose. Always refer to the specific guidelines provided by your publishing platform to ensure a smooth publishing process.

By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to successfully publishing and promoting your ebook!

Ebook Ideas

Wondering what topic to choose for your ebook? The best starting point is to consider what you want your readers to gain from it. Here are some ideas to help you find the perfect subject for your ebook:

1. New Research

If you've conducted an experiment or a business survey, you have a valuable source of proprietary knowledge. Share your findings in an ebook that details the experiment, its objectives, results, and implications for your readers and industry.

2. Case Study

Success stories resonate with potential customers, especially those who are on the fence about making a purchase. Write an ebook featuring a client’s success story, highlighting their initial challenge, how you assisted them, and the positive outcomes they achieved.

3. Product Demo

For complex products or services, create a guide that helps customers use it effectively. An ebook can break down the setup process and elaborate on each feature's functionality. For example, provide a step-by-step guide to launching and utilizing your product.

4. Interview

Have you interviewed a notable industry figure or influencer? Transform that interview into an ebook, providing your audience with valuable insights and making it easy for them to access and share the information.

5. Playbook

A playbook offers actionable tips and strategies for tackling new projects or concepts. Think of it as a cheat sheet that helps your readers excel in a specific area. For instance, create a “virus protection playbook” for IT professionals to enhance their virus prevention skills.

6. Blog Post Series

If you have a series of blog posts on a related topic, consider compiling them into an ebook. Each post can serve as a chapter, and the ebook can be promoted via a dedicated landing page. Link to this landing page from each blog post to attract readers who want the full series in one place.

Choosing the right ebook idea depends on your goals and audience needs. Whether it's sharing new research, demonstrating a product, or compiling existing content, each approach offers unique ways to engage and provide value to your readers.

Ebook FAQs

Are ebooks profitable?

Yes, they can be profitable.

Ebooks typically operate on a high-volume, low-price model. To achieve significant profit, you'll need to sell a substantial number of ebooks at a lower price point. Ebook prices can vary widely, from free to over $100, depending on the industry and content.

Before setting a price, research your audience's willingness to pay and the typical price range on platforms where you plan to sell, such as Amazon or Apple Books. Understanding these factors will help you price your ebook competitively and strategically.

How is an ebook structured?

There's no strict rule for structuring an ebook, but it generally follows a format similar to a novel or textbook. Key elements to include are:

  • Chapters: Organize your content into chapters to guide readers through your material.
  • Subheaders: Break down chapters into sections with subheaders to make the content more digestible.
  • Images: Incorporate visuals to support and enhance the text.

For instance, if you're writing about Major League Baseball, you might have chapters on different teams with subchapters focusing on specific aspects of each team.

What can an ebook be about?

An ebook can cover virtually any topic, as long as it's relevant to your audience. Examples include:

  • Industry Insights: An environmental company could write about water conservation or the impact of their product.
  • Case Studies: Showcase success stories related to your products or services.
  • Guides: Offer detailed instructions or best practices on a specific subject.

The key is to provide valuable, well-researched content that meets your readers' needs and interests.

Can you edit an ebook?

Once an ebook is saved in a major file format like PDF or EPUB, it generally cannot be edited. Therefore, it's crucial to keep an editable version in a program like Microsoft Word.

However, if your ebook is in an editable PDF format, you can make changes using Adobe Acrobat. This option allows you to edit both text and images within the PDF.

How do you read an ebook?

Ebooks can be read on a variety of devices:

  • Smartphones: iPhone and Android
  • Computers: Macbook and PC
  • E-readers: Nook and Kindle

E-readers like the Nook and Kindle are popular for their capacity to store thousands of books, making them ideal for avid readers.
